Ganderbal: Sonamarg, known for its breathtaking beauty, is gearing up to become a hub for winter sports. The Sonamarg Development Authority is planning to organize winter sports activities in this picturesque location.
For the past two years, Sonamarg has remained open during the winter season, much like other popular tourist destinations. This decision has been well-received, attracting tourists who wish to experience the enchanting snowscape of the Kashmir Valley.
Notably, the Central Government has undertaken the construction of a 6.5-kilometer tunnel known as Z Morh, which is expected to enhance accessibility to Sonamarg. Impressively, about 90% of the tunnel work has already been completed, with sources indicating that it will be open for transportation by the end of December.
The Tourism Department is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a successful winter tourism season. Their efforts are focused on attracting a maximum number of tourists, further promoting tourism in the Sonamarg Development Authority. Winter sports events are a part of this initiative, aimed at making Sonamarg a thrilling winter destination.
Dr. Elias Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of the Sonamarg Development Authority, shared, “This year, we are planning to organize winter sports events in Sonamarg. We are actively encouraging local youth to participate, thus enhancing the region’s winter beauty.”
In preparation for the upcoming season, the CEO has been in discussions with hotel owners. They have been urged to ensure their facilities remain fully operational during snowy conditions. Electricity and water supply are key concerns for hotel owners to avoid inconveniences during snowfall.
Sonamarg is poised to offer an unforgettable winter experience, not only for tourists but also for the local community.
With winter sports on the horizon and essential infrastructure improvements, the region is primed to become a winter wonderland.
